In map creation, my initial goal was to create a small, multi-story townhome designed for small-team, close-quarters combat and to build the map to scale to create a realistic feel. In addition, I wanted the walls to be thin enough, so the bullets fired by the players would penetrate the different rooms and floors of the townhome. As a prototype, the outside of the home has some basic textures applied. Although I do not plan to complete this prototype because I feel my time would be better spent learning more modern tools, such as Unity and Unreal Engine, I had fun creating this map!
I learned to make custom maps for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) by watching videos on YouTube. From the online videos, I learned about the Steam Workshop, how to install the CS:GO SDK and how to use the Hammer Level Editor. I also learned about concepts specific to the Hammer Level Editor and Source Engine such as, how to create bomb sites, setup player spawn points, add lighting to the level, apply textures to the level geometry, model staircases and more. I used my newly acquired knowledge to create the map displayed below.
